چکیده
background and objectives: diarrheagenic escherichia coli (dec) is an emerging agent among pathogens that causes diarrhea. studies showed that diarrheagenic e. coli such as enterohaemorrhagic e. coli (ehec), enteroaggregative e. coli (eaec), enteropathogenic e. coli (epec), enteroinvasive e. coli (eiec), enterotoxigenic e. coli (etec), diffusely adhering e. coli (daec) and shiga toxin producing e. coli (stec) strains are among the most frequent causative agents in acute diarrhea. the aim of this study was to determine the frequency of dec pathotypes in khuzestan province. materials and methods: stool samples were collected from patients with diarrhea in khuzestan province of iran. e. coli strains were isolated using conventional culture and standard biochemical tests. the polymerase chain reaction (pcr) technique was used to detect presence of virulence genes, i.e; eae , stx 1 and stx 2 for ehec, bfp and eae for epec, lt and st for etec, aa for eaec, inve for eiec, stx 1 and stx 2 for stec. results: altogether, 200 stool samples were obtained from patients, of which 158 (79%) were positive for e. coli . dec was identified in 127 (63%) of stool samples, which frequency of each pathotypes were as follows: atypical epec 49 (39%), typical epec 1 (0.7%), stec 50 (39.3%), etec 21 (16.3%), eaec 5 (4.0%) and eiec 1 (0.7%). most frequent etiological agents of diarrhea in khuzestan province of iran were stec and epec. conclusion: our findings showed dec had been agent of diarrhea in khuzestan. this finding provides evidence that effort should be made to estimate the burden of infection by the etiological agent for better medical approach and should raise notification about antibiotic resistance among bacterial infection. keywords: escherichia coli , pathotype, diarrhea

متن کاملEscherichia coli: a brief review of diarrheagenic pathotypes and their role in diarrheal diseases in Iran
Diarrheagenic Escherichia coli have developed different strategies for establishment of infection in their host. Understanding these pathogenic mechanisms has led to the development of specific diagnostic tools for identification and categorization of E. coli strains into different pathotypes. This review aims to provide an overview of the various categories of diarrheagenic Escherichia coli an...
متن کاملMolecular characterization of uropathogenic and diarrheagenic Escherichia coli pathotypes.
In this study diarrheagenic and uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) strains were comparatively characterized according to serotype, hemolytic activity, protein polymorphism among housekeeping enzymes, phylogenetic group and urovirulence genes. Intra-serogroup/serotype variations were observed. Hemolytic activity was detected in 100%, 93%, 67% and 39% of UPEC, EAEC, EPEC and ETEC strains, resp...
متن کاملGenetic relationship of diarrheagenic Escherichia coli pathotypes among the enteropathogenic Escherichia coli O serogroup.
The genetic relationship among the Escherichia coli pathotypes was investigated. We used random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) data for constructing a dendrogram of 73 strains of diarrheagenic E. coli. A phylogenetic tree encompassing 15 serotypes from different pathotypes was constructed using multilocus sequence typing data. Phylogram clusters were used for validating RAPD data on the clona...
متن کاملPathotypes of diarrheagenic Escherichia coli in children attending a tertiary care hospital in South India.
The prevalence of diarrheagenic Escherichia coli (DEC) in children under 5 years was studied in children with diarrhea and controls in South India. Four polymerase chain reaction (PCR) "schemes" were used to detect genes of the 6 pathotypes of DEC. In 394 children with diarrhea, 203 (52%) DEC infections were found. Among the 198 controls, 126 (63%) DEC infections were found. Enteroaggregative E...
متن کاملOccurrence of virulence genes associated with Diarrheagenic pathotypes in Escherichia coli isolates from surface water.
Escherichia coli isolates (n = 300) collected from six sites in subtropical Brisbane, Australia, prior to and after storm events were tested for the presence of 11 virulence genes (VGs) specific to diarrheagenic pathotypes. The presence of eaeA, stx(1), stx(2), and ehxA genes specific for the enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC) pathotype was detected in 56%, 6%, 10%, and 13% of isolates, respectiv...
